about me

— L Sousa Cabral

Luis is born on the 3rd of December in 1977, into a family with a long tradition of horse breeding. The country life combined with the love for animals and nature, awake in him at an early stage the need to express himself through Art, primarily sculpting. Inspired from his everyday life, his work represents equestrian, hunting and wild life scenes.

He spends his youth in the Portuguese region of Alentejo, where he is involved in the training of young Lusitano stallions and in the daily routine of his family’s stud farm. He starts hunting at a young age with his family who teach him the ethics of hunting and the respect for nature.

Through his bronze sculptures, the artist offers authenticity, from situations he has lived and felt personally, and instants that will be immediately recognisable by those who have been lucky enough to experience them as well. Moreover, his work reflects a personal preference for attitude and movements that are inherent to each animal, which convey a feeling of freedom and lightness to the sculptures, as if we were actually witnessing the scene first-hand in the country.

His first art exhibition, at the age of 17, takes place at the Lisbon Jockey Club and the success he encounters encourages him to continue. After completing a business degree, he moves to Switzerland where for 15 years he works as a private banker and discovers a different kind of natural environment, with the Middle and High Mountain. This new source of inspiration keeps him close to nature and to art, and in 2019 he obtains the first prize in the sculpting competition at the Animal Art exhibition, in Paris.
